InterVarsity's History at NIU & How You Can Partner With This Ministry
InterVarsity traces its roots to a gathering of Christian students in 1877 at the University of Cambridge, England.
In 1928, the InterVarsity movement among British universities sent Howard Guinness, a medical school graduate, to help establish a Canadian InterVarsity Fellowship.
The Canadian Fellowship grew, and 10 years later C. Stacey Woods, the Canadian InterVarsity director, was sent to visit a group of Christian students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA began with the historic meeting.
And in 1947 InterVarsity was born here at Northern Illinois University. We
have a chapter that has been faithful to this campus since then, and we are
continuing in the tradition of our rich InterVarsity roots today at NIU.
The students and faculty of this InterVarsity chapter genuinely care for
this community at NIU and desire to see the Good News about Jesus being
spread to all the campus.
Won't you share in our efforts by praying for our students, our faculty, and
our staff. If you would like to receive a bi-monthly newsletter to update
you about our ministry and our chapter, please send an e-mail to:
and let us know you like to receive those letters.
If you would like to partner with us financially you can do so in one of two
1) Our students have many activities going on throughout the semester. As
we plan activities on the campus to invite non-Christians to join us, we
need monetary help to finance our activities. Also InterVarsity students
are given many wonderful opportunities to grow in their knowledge and wisdom
of God, as well as, their life as a witness through InterVarsity training
events such as: Fall Retreat, Winterfest, Cedar Campus, School of
Leadership Training, Urbana, Spring Break work projects, and much more.
2) In order to disciple students and prepare them to be future leaders of
the church, our staff also need financial assistance to physically be
ministers to the students involved. InterVarsity staff raise their own
support so they can minister full-time. If you would like to give to one or
all three of the staff please e-mail
to inquire about who is working on our staff team, and how you may be able to help.
