Women's Traditional Dance

Image of three Women Traditional Dancers

Women are honored in Native societies and this graceful and regal dance reflects this tradition. Traditional regalia varies among the nations and tribes. The clothing is made of buckskin or cloth, and in the North, the entire top of the dress was beaded for warmth. In the South, many of the dresses are made of cloth. Southern buckskin dresses have strips of beadwork for ornamentation. The ladies carry a beaded bag, shawl, and eagle feather fan.

The Northern traditional dance is a regal bobbing motion. The women dance in place and sway their fringed dresses in time to the drum. The Southern traditional dance is an elegant walk with a gentle sway. Both raise their fans to "catch the spirit" on the honor beats of the drum.
