About the Northern Moral Sciences Club

The Northern Moral Sciences Club is a student group founded primarily for the purpose of facilitating the rational and civil discussion of the good life and the good society. Secondary purposes include the enlivening of intellectual life on campus, the cultivation of philosophical friendship, and the provision of a forum for moral and political advocacy.

Club meetings are bi-weekly, preferably held in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Normal meetings consist of a short paper given by a Member of Visitor followed, it is hoped, by enlightening, energetic debate and discussion. Meetings terminate whenever participants disperse or conversation turns decisively to new topics. The consumption of foods and beverages is encouraged.

Special meetings consist of a public presentation by a specially invited speaker, or may consist of discussion of some topic by a specially invited panel. Again illuminating and lively debate and discussion is expected. Dates of special meetings are set as opportunities  arise.

Thus far, most Club participants have been graduate students in Philosophy. However, anyone with a keen interest in questions about the good life and the good society are encouraged to attend.

Since ideas are important, their passionate advocacy is encouraged. However, all participants shall adhere to the canons of rational argument and shall treat others with basic civility, at worst, and with benevolent grace, at best.
